A jellyfish sting can be painful and may cause burning, redness, itching, or swelling. Most stings are mild, but some species can cause serious reactions. Knowing what to do after a jellyfish sting can help you respond safely.
Move Away From the Water
If you are stung while swimming, carefully leave the water to avoid another sting. Ask someone nearby for assistance if necessary. Avoid rubbing the affected area, as this may cause additional stinging cells to discharge.
Get Local First Aid Help
Jellyfish species vary considerably, so first-aid recommendations can differ by location. Follow instructions from local lifeguards, beach authorities, or medical professionals whenever they are available.
In general, avoid touching tentacles with bare hands. If tentacles remain attached, they should be handled according to local medical guidance rather than pulled away carelessly.
Watch for Serious Symptoms
Some jellyfish stings can cause severe symptoms. Difficulty breathing, chest pain, fainting, severe pain, widespread swelling, or other concerning symptoms require urgent medical attention.
Prevent Future Jellyfish Stings
Check local beach warnings before swimming and avoid areas where jellyfish have been reported. Wearing appropriate protective swimwear can also reduce skin exposure in some environments.
Knowing basic jellyfish safety can make ocean activities more enjoyable and help swimmers respond appropriately if a sting occurs.
